Note on the Text

This edition contains the epigraphs, Whinfield’s preface, all thirty numbered Flashes, Jāmī’s concluding appendix, the three historical appendices and their notes. Translation is credited in the source to E. H. Whinfield and Mīrzā Muḥammad Kazvīnī.

The historical English wording and transliteration are retained. Persian and Arabic script and the Persian manuscript facsimile are omitted. References in the historical preface to a reproduced manuscript describe the 1906 edition. Latin transliteration and Latin and Greek quotations are retained where present.

The spellings Lawā’iḥ and Jāmī are used in this edition’s new front matter and publication metadata. Historical spellings within the text remain as printed. Flashes of Light is an English rendering of the title.

Notes are collected at the end. A label such as [17.1] identifies the first original note on source page 17, not a page of this edition. The original notes’ wording is retained; the note labels and EPUB return links are new navigation.
